Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (born 1986) is an American actor who has worked across film, television and theatre. He rose from supporting parts to leading roles in both mainstream blockbusters and prestige projects, earning critical attention for a combination of physical presence and emotional subtlety.
Early life and education
Abdul-Mateen was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1986. He trained initially as an architect, earning an undergraduate degree in the field and practicing briefly before changing course. Seeking dramatic training he attended the Yale School of Drama, where he completed an MFA that prepared him for professional acting on stage and screen.
Career and notable roles
His breakout television role came in the Netflix musical-drama The Get Down, in which he played the charismatic Cadillac. He moved into film with supporting parts in Baywatch and the musical The Greatest Showman. He later joined the superhero genre and the larger DC franchise, appearing in Aquaman as the antagonist Black Manta. Other significant credits include Jordan Peele's Us and a contemporary reimagining of Candyman. On television his portrayal of Cal Abar / Doctor Manhattan in HBO's Watchmen brought widespread acclaim and a Primetime Emmy Award.
