Wiesław Gołas (1930–2021) — Polish actor and wartime veteran

Early life and wartime activities

Gołas came of age during the upheaval of World War II and, as a young man, was associated with resistance activity connected to the Armia Krajowa. Like many of his contemporaries, wartime experiences left an imprint on his life and later informed some of the historical roles he portrayed on screen.

Acting career and major roles

He achieved national fame through his portrayal of Tomasz Czereśniak in the popular World War II television series Czterej pancerni i pies, a program that became a staple of Polish television. From 1970 to 1974 he appeared in the comedy series Czterdziestolatek, and his film credits include Ogniomistrz Kaleń (1961) and Dzięcioł (1970). Over a career spanning cinema, television and theatre he became known for dependable character work and a recognizable screen presence.

In addition to screen work, Gołas performed on stage and contributed to radio and television productions. His range allowed him to move between comic parts and more serious, historically grounded characters, which helped him remain a familiar figure to audiences across decades.

Legacy and recognition

Gołas left a lasting mark on Polish popular culture: his roles are often cited when discussing postwar film and television, and his performances helped shape collective memories of mid‑20th century events and everyday life. He died in Warsaw on 9 September 2021, aged 90.
