Trained and active in theatre for much of his life, Frost also became a familiar face in television character roles from the late 1950s onward. He is widely recognized for his measured, authoritative performances and for bringing a theatrical discipline to small-screen parts.

Early life and stage career

Frost began performing professionally in the mid-20th century and spent substantial portions of his career working in regional theatre and repertory companies. His stage work provided a foundation for character acting, enabling him to inhabit a wide range of supporting roles on television and in TV movies. Although he became better known later for television, colleagues and critics often cited his stage background as central to his craft.

Television and film

Beginning in 1958, Frost built a long résumé of guest appearances, recurring parts and roles in television movies. He appeared in crime and procedural series of the era and later took parts in notable TV productions such as the mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand (1994) and the television film Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990). His screen work tended to emphasize character roles: doctors, judges, fathers and other figures of quiet authority.
