Valdis Zatlers (born 22 March 1955) is a Latvian doctor and politician who served as the seventh President of Latvia from 2007 until 2011. He was elected president on 31 May 2007, took office on 8 July 2007, and left the presidency on 7 July 2011 after an unsuccessful campaign for a second term.

Background and medical career

Zatlers trained and worked as a physician before entering public office. During his medical career he gained experience as a surgeon and hospital manager, which raised his public profile and provided the basis for his later move into national politics.

Presidency (2007–2011)

After winning the presidential vote on 31 May 2007, Zatlers assumed the functions of head of state on 8 July 2007. In that role he represented Latvia in international affairs, performed the constitutional duties of the office and acted as commander-in-chief. His term lasted four years and ended on 7 July 2011, following a failed bid to remain as the country's president.

Later activity

Following his presidency, Zatlers remained active in public life. He became involved in party politics and participated in parliamentary elections, later serving in the Saeima. His post-presidential work focused on political reform and anti-corruption themes.
