Overview
Ulrich "Ueli" Maurer (born 1 December 1950) is a Swiss politician associated with the Swiss People's Party (SVP). He rose from local and parliamentary politics to the seven-member Swiss Federal Council, the country’s collective executive. As a Federal Councillor he became widely known for his focus on security, public finances and pragmatic administration. He served as President of the Swiss Confederation for the calendar year 2019; for more on the office see the presidency.
Political career and offices
Maurer was active in politics at municipal, cantonal and national levels before entering federal government. He served as a long-time leader within the Swiss People's Party and represented his party in the federal parliament prior to his election to the Federal Council. He was elected to the Federal Council in December 2008 and took office on 1 January 2009.
Federal responsibilities
During his time on the Federal Council Maurer led major federal departments. He first headed the Federal Department responsible for defence, civil protection and sport, later moving to lead the Federal Department of Finance. His portfolio required oversight of military and civil preparedness, procurement and, in the finance role, budgeting, taxation policy and federal accounting. Maurer’s management style has been described as cautious and fiscally disciplined.
Positions and public profile
Maurer is associated with the conservative, national-oriented wing of Swiss politics that emphasizes sovereignty, fiscal restraint and law-and-order issues. He played an influential role in shaping his party’s strategy during his tenure as party leader and in federal government. Observers note his practical, low-key approach and preference for detailed administrative work over rhetorical campaigning.
Personal background and notable facts
Born in 1950 and coming from a modest, rural background, Maurer brought private-sector and local-government experience to national office. He became one of the more senior figures on the Federal Council, and his year as president followed the Swiss convention in which the presidency rotates annually among councillors. Throughout his public life he remained a prominent representative of the SVP’s priorities within Switzerland’s consensus-oriented political system.
