Titus (Roman Emperor, 79–81 CE)

Military career

Before becoming emperor Titus built his stature as a military leader. He played a leading role in the Roman campaign in Judea and in the siege of Jerusalem, which ended the First Jewish–Roman War. The victory was later celebrated in Rome and remains a key episode of his career.

Rule and public works

As emperor Titus completed and opened the Flavian Amphitheatre (the Colosseum) and organized large public spectacles. His administration is noted for responding to crises: most famously the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, when imperial resources were mobilized to assist affected towns and survivors.

Reputation

Ancient sources generally portray Titus as generous, humane and popular with the Roman people. Because his reign lasted only two years, he did not found long-lasting institutions, but contemporaries praised his clemency and public benefactions, which contrasted with the later image of his brother and successor.

Legacy

Titus was deified after his death in 81 CE and remembered through monuments and coinage. The Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum commemorates the sack of Jerusalem. Modern historians regard him as an effective relief administrator and a transitional figure in the Flavian dynasty.
