He is widely recognized for his memorable supporting turns: the fast-talking insurance agent Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day and the troubled Sammy Jankis in Memento, directed by Christopher Nolan. Beyond single standout parts, Tobolowsky has built a reputation for vivid, scene-stealing performances across genres.

Career and notable roles

On television he has been a frequent guest star and recurring cast member. His credits include Commissioner Hugo Jarry on Deadwood, Bob Bishop on Heroes, Sandy Ryerson on Glee, Stu Beggs on Californication, and Action Jack Barker on Silicon Valley. Storytelling, writing and music

Outside of acting he is a practiced storyteller. He writes and performs autobiographical essays and short pieces that draw on his life and career; many of these have appeared in live readings, radio broadcasts and recordings. He also hosts a long-running audio series in which he narrates personal stories and reflections, bringing his theatrical instincts to a voice-first medium. He is also active as a musician and has incorporated music and song into some live performances.

Born in 1951, Tobolowsky has worked consistently for decades, moving between film sets, television productions and theatre stages. He is of Jewish heritage and frequently cites personal history and family in his storytelling. His longevity and versatility make him a familiar face to multiple generations of viewers.
