His presidency focused on economic development, strengthening state institutions and maintaining a cautious foreign policy balancing relations with Russia, Europe and regional neighbours. He was re-elected for a second term in 2013.
Controversies and transition
The 2008 election and its aftermath prompted mass demonstrations and a government response that drew domestic and international attention. Later in his tenure, constitutional amendments shifted some executive power toward the prime minister’s office. When Sargsyan became prime minister again in 2018 after completing his presidential term, widespread protests known as the Velvet Revolution led to his resignation days after his appointment.
Legacy and notable facts
Sargsyan’s decade in high office has left a mixed legacy: supporters cite stability and development efforts, while critics point to concentrated power and disputed elections.
