Sébastien Buemi (born 31 October 1988 in Aigle, Vaud) is a Swiss professional racing driver known for versatility across single-seaters, electric racing and endurance prototypes. He rose from karting into international junior formulae before reaching the highest levels of motorsport.

Early career

Buemi progressed through the conventional junior path used by many professional drivers: karting at a young age, then national and continental single-seater championships. His early results in formula categories attracted attention from teams in GP2/Formula Renault–level series and opened opportunities for testing roles with major racing organisations.

Formula One

Buemi made his Formula One breakthrough with Scuderia Toro Rosso, competing as a race driver in the world championship. In addition to his race outings, he later served in development and reserve capacities for top teams, contributing simulator work and technical feedback while gaining experience in car setup and race operations.

Formula E and electric racing

When the FIA Formula E Championship was established, Buemi became one of its prominent competitors. He enjoyed multiple race victories and consistently contested the title in several seasons, driving for leading manufacturer-backed teams and earning a reputation for energy management, qualifying pace and racecraft in the electric single-seater series.

Endurance racing and Le Mans

Parallel to his single-seater and electric-racing efforts, Buemi built a strong endurance-racing résumé. He joined a top manufacturer programme in the FIA World Endurance Championship, competing in prototype cars at events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. His endurance work includes a notable overall victory at Le Mans as part of a factory team line-up, underlining his adaptability to long-distance, multi-driver competition.

Driving style and legacy

Buemi is widely regarded for technical consistency, strong feedback to engineers and an ability to manage tyres and energy over race distance. His career demonstrates a modern driver’s path: flexible across disciplines, comfortable with hybrid and electric technology, and valued both as a racer and as a development driver.
