Raul Khajimba (born 21 March 1958) is an Abkhaz politician who rose to prominence in the contested politics of Abkhazia, a de facto state in the South Caucasus. His name appears in Georgian as რაულ ჰაჯიმბა. Khajimba has been a central figure in the region's post‑Soviet leadership, occupying several top offices over two decades and shaping Abkhazia's relationship with neighbouring states and with the Russian Federation.

Political career and offices

Khajimba has held multiple senior positions in Abkhazia's government. Major posts include:

  • Defence Minister (2002–2003)
  • Prime Minister (2003–2004) — head of government during a turbulent transition period; see role of the prime minister in Abkhaz politics
  • Vice‑President (2005–2009)
  • Chairman of the Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia (2010–2015)
  • President of Abkhazia (elected 2014)

2014 election and presidency

Khajimba won the presidency in 2014 after a period of political upheaval often described as the May events or a revolution in Abkhazia. His administration pursued close cooperation with Russia and emphasised security and stability in a region with limited international recognition. He had stood in several earlier presidential contests before securing victory in 2014.

Resignation and later developments

Persistent political opposition and disputes over later elections culminated in mass protests following the 2019 presidential vote. Those protests led to Khajimba's resignation in January 2020. His departure marked a notable shift in Abkhaz politics and opened the way for new leadership amid continuing debates over governance, sovereignty and external ties.

Significance and controversies

Khajimba is a polarising figure: supporters credit him with maintaining order and strengthening ties with Russia, while critics accuse his administrations of authoritarian tendencies and of failing to broaden international recognition for Abkhazia. His career illustrates the complexities of leadership in a partially recognised territory and the influence of external actors on domestic politics.
