Pius Adesanmi — Nigerian‑Canadian professor, columnist and satirist

Pius Adesanmi (1972–2019) was a Nigerian‑born Canadian academic, essayist and satirist known for his cultural criticism, the essay collection Naija No Dey Carry Last and his 2015 TED talk.

Overview

Pius Adebola Adesanmi (27 February 1972 – 10 March 2019) was a Nigerian‑born Canadian academic, writer and public intellectual. He combined scholarly work in African literature with trenchant public commentary and satire aimed at politics, society and diaspora life. Adesanmi wrote for wide audiences as a columnist and essayist while maintaining an active career in higher education.

Academic career and approach

Adesanmi taught literature and African studies at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he engaged both students and the broader public in debates about postcolonial culture, identity and the global place of African voices. His academic work drew upon literary criticism and cultural theory, but he was also known for a conversational, often humorous prose style that bridged scholarly insight and popular commentary.

Writings and public commentary

He published essays and columns in numerous Nigerian and international outlets, addressing themes such as governance, corruption, migration and the aspirations of young Africans. His 2015 book Naija No Dey Carry Last is a collection of essays that uses satire and irony to reflect on Nigerian life and politics. That same year he delivered a widely viewed TED talk titled "Africa is the forward that the world needs to face," which argued for a reappraisal of Africa's role in contemporary global affairs.

Notable qualities and influence

Readers and colleagues valued Adesanmi for combining scholarly rigor with wit and moral seriousness. He used humor and pointed critique to make complex historical and political issues accessible, and he became a recognizable voice for a generation of African intellectuals who inhabit both continent and diaspora.

Death and aftermath

On 10 March 2019 Adesanmi was among the passengers who died when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after takeoff. The accident ended a career that spanned teaching, public writing and media engagement, and it prompted tributes across academic, journalistic and artistic communities in Canada, Nigeria and beyond.
