Philip Andrew "Phil" Gartside (April 1952 – 10 February 2016) was an English businessman and football executive. He is most widely known for his long association with Bolton Wanderers Football Club, serving as the club's chairman from 1999 until 2015. Gartside's tenure coincided with some of the club's most prominent years in the modern era.

Early life and business background

Gartside was born and raised in Leigh, Lancashire. Before becoming prominent in football administration he worked in private business; though he kept a low public profile about his commercial interests, he was regarded locally as an experienced company director and investor. His business experience provided the foundation for his later role in running and financing a professional football club.

Chairmanship at Bolton Wanderers

Gartside took the chair at Bolton Wanderers in 1999. During his time in charge the club spent a sustained period competing in England's top divisions and appeared in UEFA club competition. He oversaw major decisions about management appointments, player recruitment, and the club's commercial direction.
