Bonaventura Duda (14 January 1924 – 3 August 2017) was a Croatian theologian, New Testament scholar and influential public intellectual. Over several decades he combined academic teaching, translation work and pastoral engagement, becoming widely respected for his role in renewing biblical studies and liturgical language in Croatia. He was elected a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and is remembered for promoting the aggiornamento encouraged by the Second Vatican Council.
Academic career and teaching
Duda taught New Testament Scripture at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Zagreb, where he chaired the Department of the Scriptures of the New Testament from the mid-1960s. He served repeatedly as vice-dean and was dean of the Faculty from 1982 to 1986. After a long career of instruction and administration he retired in 1993 and was later named Professor Emeritus, a recognition of his enduring contribution to theological education.
Scholarship and translations
His scholarship focused on bringing biblical texts and modern biblical criticism into dialogue with pastoral needs and liturgical practice. Duda was widely regarded as one of the leading translators and popularizers of Scripture in the Croatian language, working to render biblical texts accessible and intelligible to contemporary readers and worshippers. His translations and commentaries sought clarity of language while remaining attentive to historical and theological nuance.
Public role and the Second Vatican Council
Duda advocated the spirit of reform associated with the Second Vatican Council, emphasizing renewal in liturgy, scripture study and the Church's engagement with the modern world. He combined scholarly rigor with a commitment to pastoral application, encouraging clergy and laity to read the Bible more actively and to integrate scriptural insights into parish life and catechesis.
