Paul Gardner Allen (January 21, 1953 – October 15, 2018) was an American entrepreneur and investor best known for co‑founding Microsoft with Bill Gates. Born and raised in the Seattle area, he lived much of his life on Mercer Island. Allen combined technology success with wide‑ranging interests in sports, science, culture and the arts.

Early career and Microsoft

Allen and Gates began working together on software projects in the 1970s; their partnership produced one of the early and most influential personal‑computer software companies. Although Allen stepped away from day‑to‑day management in the early 1980s after a serious illness, he remained a prominent shareholder and an active figure in technology and business for decades thereafter.

Business ventures, science and philanthropy

After Microsoft, Allen established Vulcan Inc. to manage his investments and philanthropic activities. He funded scientific research and institutions, including brain research and astronomy projects, supported technology startups and invested in aerospace ventures. His charitable giving supported museums, education and medical research; he also collected art and sponsored cultural programs.

Sports ownership and public profile

Allen owned multiple professional sports teams and properties, raising his public visibility beyond the technology world. He was the owner of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, and was a minority investor in MLS's Seattle Sounders FC. His teams competed in the NFL, NBA and Major League Soccer, reflecting his wide interest in sports and community engagement.

Death and legacy

Allen died in Seattle on October 15, 2018, at age 65. The immediate cause was septic shock arising from complications of non‑Hodgkin lymphoma. He was widely remembered for his role in the personal computing revolution, large philanthropic commitments, and investments in science and culture. His legacy includes institutions and projects that continue to support research, the arts and regional development.
