Overview

Patrick Macnee (6 February 1922 – 25 June 2015) was an English-born actor who later became a naturalized American citizen. He is most widely remembered for portraying the urbane secret agent John Steed in the British television series The Avengers, a role that made him an international television star and a symbol of stylish British popular culture.

Early life and beginnings

Macnee began his career in the theatre and worked in a variety of stage and radio productions before moving into television during the 1950s and 1960s. He served in the armed forces during the Second World War and returned to acting afterwards, gradually building a reputation for poise, diction and dry wit that suited both dramatic and light-comic parts.

Career and The Avengers

His portrayal of John Steed—suave, impeccably dressed and often armed with a bowler hat and umbrella—became culturally iconic. Paired with a succession of intelligent and assertive female partners, the series combined espionage, surreal humour and stylish production design. The Steed character helped define a certain image of the British gentleman-spy that influenced later portrayals in television and film.

Later work and other roles

After The Avengers, Macnee continued to work steadily in television, film and voice projects. He appeared in feature films and made frequent guest appearances on television series in both the United Kingdom and the United States. His career spanned several decades and included stage revivals, interviews, and written reflections on his life in the performing arts.

Legacy

Macnee is remembered for his elegance, timing and ability to blend suavity with a wry, knowing humour. The distinctive image of John Steed—the hat, the umbrella, and the impeccable suit—remains a touchstone in popular culture. Macnee’s career is often cited when discussing the development of television heroes and the cross-Atlantic careers of British actors during the mid-20th century.
