Overview
Quentin Leo Cook (born 16 July 1963), best known by his stage name Fatboy Slim, is an English musician, record producer and disc jockey. He rose to wide prominence in the 1990s with a string of sample-driven singles and albums that helped popularize the "big beat" strand of electronic dance music. Cook's productions are noted for energetic breakbeats, heavy use of samples and a sense of humour that carried through both recordings and videos.
Early life and career
Cook was born in Bromley, in Kent, and grew up in Reigate, Surrey. He began his public career as the bassist in an indie-pop group before moving into dance and electronic projects. Over time he recorded and performed under several group names and aliases, including Beats International, Freak Power and Pizzaman, before consolidating his work under the Fatboy Slim identity.
Major releases
As Fatboy Slim he released several albums that reached broad audiences and radio playlists. Notable records include Better Living Through Chemistry, You've Come a Long Way, Baby and Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, along with later releases that continued his focus on club-friendly, sample-led production. Singles such as "The Rockafeller Skank", "Praise You", "Weapon of Choice" and "Right Here, Right Now" remain widely recognised and have been used frequently in media and live programming.
Music videos and collaborations
Cook's work has been complemented by memorable music videos. "Praise You" featured a low-budget, guerrilla-style dance performance and "Weapon of Choice" became notable for a cinematic clip starring an actor performing an unexpected dance sequence; both videos helped extend the songs' appeal beyond the club scene. Throughout his career he has worked with a range of vocalists, musicians and remix partners across electronic, funk and hip-hop styles.
Live performances and influence
Beyond studio work, Cook is well known for large-scale DJ sets and outdoor events that brought dance music to broader, non-club audiences. He staged prominent seaside and stadium shows and curated high-profile one-off events that attracted diverse crowds. As a figure associated with the big beat movement, he is often mentioned alongside contemporaries from the 1990s who helped move electronic music into mainstream pop charts and festival lineups.
Personal life and legacy
Cook married broadcaster Zoe Ball in 1999; the couple have two children and later separated. His legacy lies in successful crossover singles, influential albums and a public profile that demonstrated how a DJ and producer could be a mainstream recording artist as well as a live performer. Newer generations of producers and DJs continue to cite the sample-led, high-energy approach of his most popular records as an influence.
