She became widely identified with the comic‑strip reporter Lois Lane after playing the role in the Columbia Pictures movie serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950) and later as a principal cast member of the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman. For basic career information see biography and credits.
Early career and screen work
Neill began acting in the late 1930s and built a steady résumé of supporting parts in films and guest appearances on television. Her screen presence, clear diction and ability to play a determined, quick‑thinking reporter made her a natural fit for the Lois Lane character, a part she first took on in the Columbia serials that brought the Superman mythos to theatres in a serialized format.
Lois Lane: defining role
Her portrayal of Lois Lane helped shape popular perceptions of the comic‑strip heroine for a generation. Neill performed the role in two movie serials and then joined the Adventures of Superman television series, where she appeared alongside George Reeves. (Phyllis Coates played Lois in the program's first season; Neill assumed the part for subsequent seasons.) The performance emphasized Lois's professional determination, intelligence and recurring rivalry with Superman's alter ego.
