Nichelle Nichols (born Grace Dell Nichols; December 28, 1932 – July 30, 2022) was an American actress, singer and voice artist whose portrayal of Lieutenant Nyota Uhura on the television series Star Trek: The Original Series made her an iconic figure in science fiction and a symbol of diversity on U.S. television. Her screen presence broke ground by presenting an African American woman in a professional, competent role during the 1960s.
