Mike Gibson (27 May 1940 – 23 September 2015), often referred to by the nickname "Gibbo", was a well-known Australian sports journalist and broadcaster. Over several decades he became a familiar face and voice to Australian sports audiences, working across television programs that helped shape televised sports commentary and discussion.
Career and broadcasting work
Gibson established himself as a television presenter and commentator, most notably as an original presenter on Nine's Wide World of Sports, a major sports program in Australia. Late in his career he was a long-standing host of The Back Page on Fox Sports, a program that blended sports news, opinion and interviews; he presented that show for about 16 years before retiring from regular broadcasting in 2013. His career spanned live events, studio panels and interview formats, and he was regarded for bringing a conversational and sometimes wry style to sports coverage.
Style, influence and public role
Gibson's on-screen manner combined experienced sports knowledge with approachable commentary, which helped popularise panel-style sports discussion in Australian television. Colleagues and viewers often cited his easygoing delivery and readiness to engage with both athletes and fellow journalists. He contributed to a media environment where opinion and analysis became an expected part of sports programming.
Personal life
Gibson was born in Sydney, New South Wales. He married his wife Helen in 1959; the marriage ended in divorce in 1989. He was a father to five children. Outside broadcasting he was known to maintain friendships across the sports and media communities.
Death and legacy
Gibson died on 23 September 2015 at his home on the Central Coast of New South Wales at the age of 75. Reports noted he had experienced depression, and his death was subsequently ruled a suicide. His passing prompted reflections in Australian media on the pressures faced by public figures and on his contribution to sports journalism.
