Overview

Kenneth Michael Conaway, known as Mike Conaway (born June 11, 1948), is an American politician and member of the Republican Party. He served as a U.S. Representative from the state of Texas in the House of Representatives from 2005 until his retirement in 2021. During his time in Congress he was identified with conservative positions on energy, agriculture and fiscal matters.

Career and committee service

Conaway worked in the private sector before entering elected office, with ties to agricultural and energy businesses that informed his congressional priorities. In the House he held several committee assignments; most prominently he chaired the House Agriculture Committee, and he also served on panels concerned with intelligence and ethics. His committee roles put him at the center of congressional oversight of farm policy, rural programs and national security matters connected to intelligence work.

Policy focus and legislative priorities

Throughout his tenure Conaway concentrated on issues important to his largely rural and energy-producing district. Key areas of focus included farm policy, commodity programs, rural development, and energy production. He advocated for policies aimed at supporting agricultural producers, expanding market access, and promoting domestic energy industries, while emphasizing budgetary restraint and regulatory relief.

Notable actions and reputation

As committee chair and a senior member of House panels, Conaway led hearings and helped shape legislation related to farming, nutrition programs and rural infrastructure. His work attracted attention for balancing regional interests—such as oil, gas and farming—with broader national policy debates. Colleagues described him as a pragmatic legislator who sought consensus on complex committee work.

After Congress and legacy

Conaway did not seek re-election in 2020 and left the House in early 2021. His congressional legacy centers on agricultural policy stewardship, energy issues relevant to western and rural Texas, and active participation in congressional oversight.
