Marshall Warren Nirenberg

American biochemist who helped decipher the genetic code and shared the 1968 Nobel Prize for discoveries about how nucleotide sequences direct protein synthesis.

Marshall Warren Nirenberg (April 10, 1927 – January 15, 2010) was an American biochemist whose experiments revealed how sequences of nucleotides in RNA specify the sequence of amino acids in proteins. Working at the National Institutes of Health, he produced the first direct experimental link between a short RNA sequence and a corresponding amino acid, a breakthrough that opened modern molecular genetics.

In a landmark 1961 experiment with a cell‑free translation system, Nirenberg and his colleague Heinrich Matthaei showed that a synthetic RNA composed only of uracil (poly‑U) directed the formation of a polypeptide made entirely of phenylalanine. That result identified the first RNA codon and set in motion a systematic effort to decode the triplet code of messenger RNA that directs protein synthesis.

Nirenberg expanded the experimental approach to assign many of the codons to their corresponding amino acids and to demonstrate the general principles of the triplet code. For this work he shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Robert W. Holley and H. Gobind Khorana, who contributed complementary techniques for deciphering the code and understanding transfer RNA structure.
