Marlon Jackson (born March 12, 1957, in Gary, Indiana) is an American singer and musician who rose to fame as one of the members of The Jackson 5. As part of the family ensemble he contributed backing vocals, percussion and stage choreography during the group's most active years. His public profile has been lower than some of his siblings, but he remains associated with the Jackson family’s musical legacy.
Early life and rise with the family band
Born into a large musical family, Marlon joined his brothers in a band that began performing locally in Gary before winning national attention in the late 1960s. The Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records and achieved rapid commercial success with a string of hits. Marlon was part of the core lineup that toured and recorded through the group’s Motown period and subsequent transition to other labels.
Role and musical contributions
In the ensemble, Marlon primarily sang backing parts and provided instrumental support, notably on percussion. He also took part in the group's coordinated stage routines, a defining feature of their early shows. While not typically a lead vocalist like Michael or Jermaine, Marlon's presence and stage work contributed to the group's overall sound and public image.
Solo work and later collaborations
Outside the family group, Marlon's recorded output has been limited. In 1980 he made a recorded appearance on his sister La Toya Jackson's first album, marking his first credited work beyond The Jackson 5. He later released a solo album titled Baby Tonight in 1987. Afterward he largely stepped back from a continuous solo recording career, though he joined family reunions and group projects such as the 1989 single "2300 Jackson Street" credited to The Jacksons, which featured many Jackson siblings.
Selected recordings and appearances
- Early hit recordings with The Jackson 5 (group performances and albums from the late 1960s–1970s)
- Guest appearance on La Toya Jackson’s debut album (1980)
- Solo album: Baby Tonight (1987)

Notable distinctions: Marlon Jackson is one of the Jackson siblings who kept a relatively private life after the peak of the group's fame. Though he did not pursue a high-profile solo career comparable to Michael Jackson's, his role within The Jackson 5 helped shape the group's ensemble dynamic. He has occasionally appeared in family projects and reunions, which preserve the group's historical significance in pop and soul music.
