During a career that began in the early 1990s he became established at top clubs in the Netherlands, England and Spain, and was a regular for the Netherlands national team.
Playing style and characteristics
Overmars played primarily as a winger. He combined explosive acceleration with close control, making him effective on the counter-attack and in one-on-one situations. Subsequent transfers took him to England and Spain, where he featured for prominent clubs and contributed both goals and assists. Injuries affected parts of his later career, but his peak years are remembered for decisive performances in important matches.

He was appreciated for the different attacking dimension he brought to the national team through pace and width, complementing central forwards and creative midfielders.

His legacy is most often discussed in terms of his impact on fast wing play in the 1990s and early 2000s and his contributions to the clubs and country he represented.
