Overview
Marco Aurelio Denegri Santagadea (16 May 1938 – 27 July 2018) was a Peruvian public intellectual whose work spanned literary criticism, linguistic observation of Spanish, and sexology. He became widely known in Peru for his erudite style and his efforts to bring technical topics about language and sexuality to a general audience through print and broadcast media.
Career and contributions
Denegri's career combined scholarship, criticism and popularization. He wrote essays on literature and the Spanish language, commented on usages and registers, and addressed sexual topics from a scholarly and educational perspective. In the 1970s he edited and directed the magazine Revista Científica y Artística de Cultura Sexual — Fáscinum, whose first issue appeared in April 1972. Later he reached television viewers with the interview program A solas con Marco Aurelio Denegri, broadcast on the cable channel Cable Mágico Cultural between 1997 and 2000.
Topics and style
Denegri was noted for a precise, sometimes austere mode of exposition: a willingness to analyze language at the level of grammar and usage, combined with a direct approach to topics of sexual culture and education. His writing and programs frequently addressed distinctions between colloquial and formal Spanish, the social implications of linguistic choices, and the need for informed public discussion about sex and morality.
Significance and legacy
He is remembered as a figure who bridged academic concerns and popular media, helping to elevate conversations about language and sexuality in Peru. Colleagues and listeners often praised his intellectual rigor and his insistence on clarity. While his manner could be polarizing, his role in establishing spaces for discussion—through Fáscinum, essays and televised interviews—remains part of his legacy.
