Although he began his career in the lower divisions, Riva built his reputation at Cagliari, where he spent the bulk of his professional life. He helped the club rise to the top of Italian football and played a central role in Cagliari's most successful period, including the club's sole Serie A title in 1969–70. He remains closely associated with Cagliari and is the club's all-time leading scorer.

International career

As an Italian international, Riva earned a reputation for scoring in important matches. Playing for the Italy national team, he scored 35 goals in 42 appearances, a record that made him Italy's all-time top scorer for decades. He was a key member of the team that won the 1968 European Championship and featured prominently at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, where Italy finished as runners-up.
