Bobby Frank Rule (June 29, 1944 – September 5, 2019) was an American basketball player best known for his time as a center. Born in Riverside, California, Rule rose to prominence during the formative years of the National Basketball Association team in Seattle and remained a recognizable presence in the league throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Early life and arrival in the NBA

Rule's background included local and collegiate play that led to professional attention. He joined the NBA during a period of rapid growth for the sport, becoming part of a new Seattle franchise where he quickly established himself as a productive frontcourt player. His physical size and scoring touch around the basket made him an important contributor for an expansion team seeking identity and local stars.

Professional career

Rule spent the most notable portion of his career with the Seattle franchise, later known as the SuperSonics. Over subsequent seasons he also played for several other teams in the league, including the Philadelphia 76ers, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and, briefly, the Milwaukee Bucks. His movement around the league reflected the common career path of many role players of the era: early prominence, transitions between clubs, and contributions both as a starter and reserve.

Playing style and contributions

As a center, Rule was recognizable for his inside scoring and rebounding. Contemporary accounts emphasize his ability to finish in the paint and to provide a physical presence on the boards. While not a Hall of Fame figure, he offered reliable offense for teammates and was part of the foundational identity of a young franchise that sought to compete in a growing league.

Legacy and later life

After retiring from professional play, Rule remained linked to the communities where he had lived and played. He passed away on September 5, 2019, in Riverside, California, at age 75. Remembered by fans for his role during the early period of the Seattle team, Rule's career is often cited when discussing the challenges and achievements of players who helped establish newer franchises in the NBA.
