Dessau practised as a lawyer specialising in family law before being appointed to the Family Court of Australia in 1995. She served on that court until 2013, hearing matters involving divorce, parenting arrangements and family property. Her judicial work focused on the complex intersection of legal, social and child welfare issues that characterise family law practice.

Role as Governor

  • representing the state at official events and ceremonies
  • promoting community initiatives, charities and cultural organisations
  • hosting and supporting visits by interstate and international delegations

Honours, significance and public engagement

Dessau was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), reflecting her service to the law and the community. Her tenure as governor drew attention for its symbolic significance in broadening representation in high public office and for continuing the vice-regal tradition of community engagement and support for social causes.

Notable facts

Her career bridges legal practice, judicial service and vice-regal duties, illustrating the varied public roles experienced jurists can hold. For official information about the office and activities during her term see the Governor of Victoria website.
