Overview
Letitia Christian Tyler (born November 12, 1790) was the wife of John Tyler, who became the tenth President of the United States. She served as First Lady from 1841 until her death on September 10, 1842. Her time in the national spotlight was brief and shaped by persistent health problems that limited her participation in public events.
Early life and family
Letitia was raised in a Virginia planter family and married John Tyler well before his rise to the presidency. Together they raised a large family and managed the household and plantation responsibilities typical of elite southern families of the early 19th century. She bore several children; John Tyler ultimately had a notably large family over two marriages.
Role as First Lady
When John Tyler assumed the presidency after the death of his predecessor, Letitia took on the ceremonial title but could not sustain an active public program. Because of her chronic illness, many public-facing duties and social functions at the White House were performed by female relatives and household members. Notably, a daughter-in-law acted as the primary hostess during much of the administration, ensuring continuity in official receptions and entertainments while Letitia remained largely at home.
Health, death, and legacy
Letitia's persistent health problems curtailed her appearances in Washington and elsewhere, and she spent extended periods away from public life. Her death in 1842 ended a short tenure as the nation's first lady; her husband remained in office. Historians often note her as an example of early 19th-century first ladies whose influence was exercised principally within the domestic sphere rather than through visible public roles. Her situation illustrates how personal circumstances—health, family obligations, and social expectations—shaped the functions of presidential spouses in the antebellum United States.
