Overview

Kyle Boller (born June 17, 1981) is a former American football quarterback who played college football at the University of California and spent several seasons in the National Football League. He was selected in the first round, 19th overall, of the 2003 NFL Draft and saw time with the Baltimore Ravens, the St. Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders during his professional career.

Early life and college career

Boller was born in Burbank, California. He developed as a quarterback through high school into a starter at the University of California, Berkeley, where he built a reputation for a strong arm and mobility. At Cal he led the team in passing and attracted NFL scouts with a mix of size, leadership and statistical production.

Professional career

Drafted in 2003 as a first-round pick, Boller became the primary starter for the Baltimore franchise early in his tenure. Injuries and inconsistency affected his ability to produce at a steady level; he later spent a season with the St. Louis organization and had a stint with the Oakland franchise. Evaluations of his pro career range from appreciation for specific performances to criticism that he failed to match the expectations of a first-round selection.

Playing style and legacy

Boller was known for his physical size, arm strength and occasional ability to improvise under pressure. Analysts often noted his promise coming out of college and pointed to injuries and turnovers as factors that limited his long-term impact in the NFL. While some observers consider him an example of an early-round pick that did not reach projected heights, others highlight memorable starts and his contributions when healthy.

Personal life

Off the field, Boller has kept a relatively private life. He married former pageant titleholder Carrie Prejean and has maintained ties to the communities where he grew up and played. Post-playing pursuits have included media appearances, local coaching and involvement in youth sports.
