Klaus Hänsch (born 15 December 1938) is a German politician best known for his long service in the European Parliament. A member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, he represented German voters in the European legislature from the first direct elections in 1979 until 2009. In the Parliament he sat with the Party of European Socialists group and became one of its prominent figures.
Political career and roles
Hänsch served continuously as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for three decades, a tenure that encompassed major phases in the European project. From 1994 to 1997 he held the office of President of the European Parliament, a role in which he chaired plenary sittings, represented the institution externally and helped steer parliamentary work during a period of treaty implementation and enlargement discussions. Throughout his time as an MEP he was involved in parliamentary work aimed at strengthening democratic oversight, transparency and the legislative role of the Parliament.
Focus and contributions
Across committees and delegations, Hänsch was associated with efforts to deepen cooperation among member states, to improve social policies at the European level and to make Parliament a more effective co-legislator. He took part in debates over treaty changes, institutional reform and the enlargement process that shaped the European Union's development in the 1990s and 2000s. Colleagues regarded him as a representative of social-democratic priorities within the Assembly.
