José Greci (10 January 1941 – 1 June 2017) was an Italian actress whose work spanned cinema, television and the theatrical stage. She first attracted international attention with a credited appearance as the Virgin Mary in the 1959 epic directed by William Wyler, Ben-Hur. While that debut was brief, it helped launch a career centred in the Italian film industry of the 1960s and 1970s.
Training and theatrical background
Greci was formally trained at the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art, Italy's principal school for dramatic training. The academy emphasizes classical theatre technique, voice and movement, and many of its alumni build careers that alternate between stage work and screen roles. Greci's education informed her approach to both dramatic and popular parts.
Film and screen career
After her screen debut, Greci became active in Italian cinema, appearing in a range of productions from historical epics to popular genre pictures. The postwar Italian film industry offered many such opportunities: scores of actors moved between large-scale period pieces and the commercially driven genres of the era. Greci's roles often made use of her classical presence and screen poise, and she worked with a variety of directors and production companies active in Rome and beyond.
Stage, television and later work
Alongside film, Greci continued to perform on stage and take roles in television dramas and series, a common pattern for Italian actors of her generation. Television in Italy expanded rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s, opening new venues for actors schooled in theatre to reach broader audiences. In later decades she reduced her public activity but remained a recognizable figure to fans of mid-century Italian cinema.

José Greci died in Rome on 1 June 2017 at the age of 76. While not a household name internationally, she represents a generation of classically trained Italian performers who contributed to both the national theatre tradition and the vibrant film industries of postwar Italy.
