Overview
Jerry Vale (born Gennaro Luigi Vitaliano; July 8, 1930 – May 18, 2014) was an American singer known for a warm, lyrical voice and a repertoire of romantic ballads. Raised in an Italian-American community in New York, Vale developed a singing style that combined popular American standards with Italian sentiment and phrasing. He enjoyed a sustained recording and performing career from the 1950s onward and became a familiar presence on records, television and in occasional movie appearances.
Musical style and repertoire
Vale's voice was often described as smooth and mellow, well suited to slow-tempo songs, love ballads and material with an Italian flavor. He performed in English and sometimes in Italian, interpreting standards and contemporary pop tunes rather than avant-garde or experimental material. His approach emphasized clear melody, relaxed phrasing and sentimental delivery, traits that appealed to adult popular-music audiences of mid-20th century America.
Career highlights and recordings
Across several decades Vale released numerous albums and singles. His catalogue contains romantic standards and Italian-themed collections that found steady audiences on radio and in record stores. Selected recordings and songs associated with him include:
- Innamorata (Italian-themed material)
- You Don't Know Me (popular ballad repertoire)
- Old Cape Cod (interpretations of contemporary standards)
- Have You Looked into Your Heart (romantic songs and ballads)
Film appearances and public image
Vale occasionally appeared on film and television, usually portraying himself as a singer. Notably, his image and recordings were used in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas and in the film Casino, where his performances helped evoke mid-century American nightlife and Italian-American settings. These cameo appearances reinforced his association with classic pop and the era's cultural milieu.
Legacy and later life
While not primarily associated with rock or the contemporary popular music movements that followed, Vale maintained a devoted audience of listeners who favored traditional pop and romantic songs. He continued performing into later years and is remembered for a distinctive, easygoing vocal manner. Vale died in Palm Desert, California, in 2014 at the age of 83, of natural causes.
