Overview

Jan Vyčítal (born March 8, 1942 in Prague, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; died March 1, 2020) was a Czech country music performer, songwriter and visual artist. He is widely remembered as a founding member of the influential Czech country band the Greenhorns and for his long career as a singer who introduced and adapted country styles for Czech audiences.

Musical career and style

Vyčítal performed, recorded and wrote songs that blended traditional country motifs with local subjects and Czech-language lyrics. As an interpreter and composer he helped popularize country and rural-themed popular music in Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic, contributing both group and solo material. His work emphasized narrative storytelling, melodic simplicity and a connection to folk and country roots.

Visual work and other activities

In addition to music, Vyčítal was active as a graphic artist and caricaturist, producing artwork, album covers and cartoons that accompanied his musical output and public appearances. These parallel activities made him a recognizable cultural figure beyond the concert stage, linking visual humour and musical commentary in one authorial voice.

Legacy and importance

As a co-founder of the Greenhorns and as a solo artist, Vyčítal played a significant role in establishing a Czech country tradition and mentoring younger performers. His recorded legacy, public performances and visual work contributed to a broader acceptance of country-derived music in the Czech popular scene and left a lasting imprint on fans and fellow musicians.
