Overview
James Harvey "Jamie" Kennedy (born May 25, 1970) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, screenwriter and television producer. He rose to public attention in the late 1990s through his work in both feature films and television, blending character comedy, improvisation and concealed-camera pranks. His breakout film role was as Randy Meeks in the Scream horror series, and he later created and fronted several television projects and independent films.
Early life and career beginnings
Kennedy was born in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. After moving to pursue work in entertainment, he developed a career in stand-up comedy and small film roles before achieving wider recognition. Early credits and supporting parts established him as a recognizable face in genre films, which helped open opportunities in television and production.
Breakthrough: film and comedic persona
Kennedy became widely known for playing the film buff Randy Meeks in the Scream movies, a role that showcased his knack for pop-culture savvy and comic timing. He wrote and starred in Malibu's Most Wanted, a satirical comedy that lampooned elements of hip-hop culture and celebrity identity. These projects demonstrated his ability to move between supporting, character-driven parts and lead comic performances.
Television, production and series work
On television Kennedy created and hosted The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, a hidden-camera sketch series that placed improvisational scenarios in front of unsuspecting participants. He co-founded the production company Wannabe Producers with Josh Etting and produced several reality and comedy series, including projects that combined scripted elements with reality TV formats. He also worked on projects such as stand-up specials and serialized comedy efforts accessible through multiple outlets.
Documentary and later projects
In 2008 Kennedy released the documentary Heckler, which examines the relationship between stand-up comics and hostile audience members as well as media critics. He later collaborated with friends and fellow performers on experimental projects, notably the MTV series Blowin' Up with Stu Stone, which mixed music, comedy and personal storytelling. Kennedy’s film and television credits, production roles and stand-up appearances span mainstream studio releases and smaller independent ventures.
Style, reception and notable works
Kennedy’s comedic style blends observational stand-up with character-based sketches and prank setups. His public reputation has combined commercial success with occasional controversy, particularly around projects that divide critics and audiences; he has responded to critique by exploring those dynamics directly, as in his documentary work. Selected works include:
- Scream (role of Randy Meeks)
- The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (hidden-camera sketch series)
- Malibu's Most Wanted (writer and star)
