Hywel Thomas Bennett (8 April 1944 – 25 July 2017) was a Welsh actor whose career stretched across film, television and theatre. He became a familiar face to British audiences for his portrayal of James Shelley, the title character of the sitcom Shelley (1979–84) and its later sequel The Return of Shelley (1988–92). Over several decades he moved between comedy and drama, earning recognition for roles that often combined charm, irony and a slightly world-weary wit.
Career and notable roles
Bennett first came to wider public attention in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a string of film appearances. He featured in The Virgin Soldiers (1969) and then in comedies such as Loot (1970) and Percy (1971), demonstrating a capacity for both comic timing and understated dramatic work. On television he was best known as the unconventional and frequently unemployed James Shelley, a character who allowed Bennett to combine sharp humour with a more reflective, sometimes ironic performance style. In 2003 he returned to mainstream serial drama with an appearance in EastEnders as the gangster Jack Dalton, a darker part that contrasted with some of his earlier, more comedic work.
