Hristo Stoichkov (born 8 February 1966) is a retired Bulgarian professional footballer best known for his role as a forward in the late 1980s and 1990s. Renowned for his competitive spirit and ability to score from a variety of positions, Stoichkov became a symbol of Bulgarian football during a period of international success.

Playing style and characteristics

Stoichkov combined pace, powerful shooting and technical skill with a combative temperament. He could finish with both feet, score from distance or inside the penalty area, and was effective on counterattacks as well as set plays. His aggressive approach made him a natural leader on the pitch but also led to occasional disciplinary incidents.

Club and international career

At club level Stoichkov rose to prominence in Bulgaria before moving to one of Europe’s top teams, where he spent the most successful years of his career. Internationally he is most remembered for his performances at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, when Bulgaria reached the semi-finals and gained worldwide attention. Later in his career he played in several countries and, after retiring as a player, took on coaching and administrative roles within football.
