Gaston Alfonso Browne (born 9 February 1967) is an Antiguan businessman and politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda since June 2014. He is leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) and became head of government following an electoral victory that unseated the previous administration.

Early life and business career

Born and raised in Antigua, Browne worked in the private sector before entering national politics. His background in business and commerce shaped his approach to economic policy and development. Prior to leading the ABLP, he was active in local enterprises and community initiatives.

Political rise and premiership

Browne led the ABLP to victory in 2014 and secured a second term in office following a subsequent general election. As prime minister he has also held key ministerial responsibilities, including the finance portfolio at times, overseeing public finances and national economic planning.

Policy priorities

  • Economic development with emphasis on tourism, investment and infrastructure projects.
  • Promotion of foreign direct investment and public–private partnerships to spur growth.
  • Climate change advocacy for small island developing states and pursuit of international support for resilience and recovery.
  • Management of social programmes aimed at improving employment and public services.

His government has been active in regional organisations and international talks, particularly on issues that affect Caribbean nations such as tourism recovery and disaster preparedness.

Reception and notable issues

Browne's administration is credited by supporters with attracting investment and prioritising development; critics have raised concerns about public debt levels and governance practices. Like many contemporary leaders, his record mixes economic achievements with contested policy debates. He remains a prominent figure in Caribbean politics, frequently engaging in diplomacy and regional cooperation efforts.
