Franco Baresi (born 8 May 1960) is an Italian former professional footballer and coach noted for his long association with AC Milan and the Italy national team. A one-club man at Milan, he spent his entire top-level playing career with the club and later worked in coaching and youth development. Baresi is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players of his generation.
Playing style and characteristics
Baresi was best known as a sweeper (libero): a central defender who combined tactical intelligence, excellent positional sense and calm ball control. He read the game effectively, anticipated opponents' moves and could launch attacks from deep with accurate passes. His leadership, composure under pressure and ability to organise a defensive line made him a natural captain.
Club career and achievements
Spending his whole senior career at AC Milan, Baresi captained the team through some of its most successful periods. He helped Milan win major domestic titles and European trophies, anchoring defences under different coaches and adapting to evolving tactical systems, from man-marking traditions to the zonal pressing of later managers.
International career
At international level Baresi made well over eighty appearances for Italy and took part in several major tournaments. He was a key figure in the national side of the early 1990s and famously captained Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where the team reached the final.
After playing and legacy
After retiring as a player Baresi moved into coaching and youth roles, continuing his association with Milan and contributing to player development. He has been honoured by supporters and institutions for his achievements and is regularly cited in lists of the greatest defenders in football history.
