Eric Leroy Adams (born September 1, 1960) is an American politician and former law enforcement officer. He became the mayor of New York City in 2022 and leads the city government as Mayor of New York City. Adams is a member of the Democratic Party and has combined a background in policing with a long career in elective office.
Early life and law enforcement career
Adams grew up in Brooklyn and spent more than two decades in the New York City Police Department. Rising through the ranks, he served as an officer and supervisor and eventually retired after a long career in policing. His experience in the force has shaped much of his public profile and policy focus, especially on issues of public safety, community relations, and police reform. The NYPD remains a central reference in discussions of his record: New York City Police Department.
Political rise and offices held
After leaving uniformed service, Adams entered electoral politics. He represented parts of Brooklyn in the New York State Senate, serving constituents in the 20th Senate District. In 2013 he was elected Brooklyn Borough President, becoming the first African American to hold that boroughwide office. As borough president he promoted economic development, public safety initiatives, and services for neighborhoods across New York City.
Mayoralty and priorities
As mayor, Adams ran on a platform emphasizing public safety, economic recovery, small business support, homelessness management, and public health. He has sought to balance calls for police reform with policies intended to reduce violent crime and improve quality of life. His administration has also addressed transit system challenges, housing pressures, and pandemic-era recovery efforts.
Policies, debates and public image
Adams is viewed as pragmatic by supporters and has sometimes attracted criticism from progressive critics who question the compatibility of his policing background with reform demands. He has pushed initiatives that draw on his experience as a former officer while also advancing neighborhood-level investments and public health campaigns. Observers note his emphasis on data-driven policing, community partnerships, and business-oriented recovery strategies.
Significance and legacy
Eric Adams' career blends law enforcement and elected office, making him a prominent figure in contemporary urban politics. His tenure highlights the tensions and possibilities in governing a diverse, densely populated city: finding ways to keep residents safe while responding to calls for equity and accountability.
