Overview

Edward "Eddie" McKay Cheever, Jr. (born January 10, 1958 in Phoenix, Arizona) is an American racing driver whose career spanned nearly three decades across Formula One, American open-wheel series and sports car racing. He is best known for holding the record for the most World Championship Formula One race entries by an American and for winning the Indianapolis 500 as both owner and driver.

Formula One career

Cheever competed in the World Championship Formula One championship from 1978 through 1989. Over that period he entered 143 Grand Prix events and recorded 132 official starts, a tally that stands as the most starts by an American driver in F1 history. During his time in Europe he raced for several different teams, showing adaptability to a range of cars and team environments. While he never captured a world championship, his longevity and consistency at the top level built his reputation as a dependable and skilled competitor.

Return to America and Indy racing

After leaving Formula One, Cheever continued his career in the United States in CART and later the Indy Racing League (IRL). In 1997 he established his own entry in the IRL, running a team that combined his driving experience with team management duties. The following year he achieved one of the most notable milestones of his career: winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1998 as both owner and driver, a rare accomplishment in modern motorsport IRL competition and at the historic Indianapolis 500.

Racing style, versatility and later activity

Cheever has been recognized for his versatility: he competed successfully in open-wheel formulas and sports car events, adapting to different technologies and race formats. After his years as an owner-driver in open-wheel racing, his team shifted focus and later campaigned sports cars, continuing his involvement in motorsport off the track as a team principal and mentor to younger drivers.
