Biskra Province, Algeria

Geography and climate

The province includes a mix of rocky highlands, fertile oases and arid plains. Much of the cultivated land is concentrated in valley oases fed historically by groundwater and seasonal wadis. The climate is characteristically hot and dry with very warm summers, mild winters and low rainfall, typical of a hot desert climate.

Administration and settlements

Biskra functions as a wilaya (province) within Algeria's national administration. Its territory comprises a number of districts and municipalities anchored by the city of Biskra, which serves as the main urban, administrative and commercial center. Smaller towns and numerous oases communities are dispersed across the region.

Economy and uses

The local economy blends agriculture, services and light industry. Date palms and other irrigated crops are economically important, and traditional oasis farming remains visible alongside modern farming techniques. The province also supports regional trade, tourism related to desert landscapes and cultural heritage, and transport links that connect the Sahara to northern Algeria.

Biskra has long been a crossroads between Mediterranean and Saharan worlds; its oases made it a stop on caravan routes and later on modern roads and railways.
