Birkhall — Royal Deeside country house and estate

Location and landscape

Located in the foothills of the Grampian Mountains, Birkhall sits within the area known as Royal Deeside. The local landscape combines riverside meadows, mixed woodlands and moorland typical of the Scottish Highlands. Birkhall is closely linked to the larger Balmoral estate; together these holdings include extensive hill country, forests and sporting ground used traditionally for deer stalking, fishing and hillwalking.

History and royal connections

Although the wider Deeside area became widely known to the royal family after the mid-19th century, Birkhall itself has been used intermittently by successive generations. It is widely remembered as a long-term residence of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who spent significant time there in the later 20th century. Over time the house has served as a private home for other senior members of the royal family when in Scotland, providing a quieter alternative to Balmoral Castle.

House, grounds and features

The house is set within managed gardens and estate woodlands and is accompanied by traditional service buildings. Typical features include riverside walks along the Muick, garden and orchard areas near the main house, and estate buildings related to country sports and land management. The setting affords privacy and scenic views characteristic of Deeside estates.

Use and access

Birkhall remains a private residence and is not generally open to the public. Visitors to Royal Deeside can, however, enjoy public paths and countryside in the surrounding area where access arrangements permit. The estate reflects traditional Highland estate life and continues to be used for private family life and sporting pursuits rather than as a public historic site.
