Geography and administration

Saint Martin is a compact island territory characterized by beaches, low hills and a warm tropical climate. The seat of local government is in Marigot on the French side. As an overseas collectivity the territory has its own local council and executive but remains part of the French Republic: it is subject to French law in many domains and participates in national institutions. It also uses the euro as its official currency and recognizes French as an administrative language.

History and status

Historically the island was divided between French and Dutch control for centuries. The modern administrative arrangement took shape in the early 21st century: on 22 February 2007 the French portion separated from the overseas department of Guadeloupe to become the Collectivity of Saint Martin. The southern half of the island is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, commonly known as Sint Maarten. This unique binational division produces a border that is open in practice and fosters intense daily exchange.

Economy and society

Tourism is the primary economic driver, with visitors attracted to beaches, dining and shopping. The territory hosts hotels, marinas and services catering to cruise passengers and international travelers. Local society is multilingual and multicultural: French administrative practices coexist with Creole and Caribbean customs.
