Overview
Julius Edward "Chuck" Meriwether (June 30, 1956 – October 26, 2019) was a professional baseball umpire who officiated at the highest level of the sport. He began working in the American League in 1988 and, after the umpiring staffs of the two major leagues were consolidated, continued to work in both leagues through the 2009 season. During his career he wore uniform number 32 and, beginning in 2004, switched to number 14. Meriwether worked under the governance of Major League Baseball and initially in the American League.
Role and responsibilities
An MLB umpire enforces the rules of play, makes ball-and-strike and safe/out decisions, manages on-field disputes and keeps official records during games. Umpires rotate positions on the field, serve on crews led by a crew chief, and are expected to maintain impartiality and consistency across long schedules. Meriwether performed these duties for more than two decades at the major-league level, carrying the routine responsibilities shared by professional umpires.
Career path and notable points
Like most professional umpires, Meriwether advanced through the minor leagues and professional umpire schools before reaching the majors. His major-league tenure encompassed regular-season schedules and the variety of assignments typical for long-serving umpires. He became known for steady, low-key professionalism and for the longevity that allowed him to work with multiple generations of players and managers.
Significance and legacy
Meriwether was one of a relatively small group of African-American umpires in major-league history, and his career contributed to the gradual increase of diversity among professional officiating staffs. Colleagues and media accounts after his death noted his dedication to the craft and the quiet respect he earned over more than 20 seasons on the field.
Personal life and death
Later in life Meriwether lived in Nashville. He died at his home there on October 26, 2019 at age 63 after a battle with cancer. His passing was reported by multiple outlets and remembered by players, fellow umpires, and fans who followed the sport during his years of service. The city of Nashville was the place where he spent his final years.
