Chris Pérez (born August 14, 1969, San Antonio, Texas) is an American guitarist, songwriter and recording artist. He gained broad recognition as the lead guitarist for the Tejano band Selena y Los Dinos and later as the founder and frontman of the Chris Pérez Band. Pérez has been honored with a Grammy Award and is also known for his memoir about his relationship with singer Selena.
Early life and musical beginnings
Pérez grew up in Texas in a musical environment and developed an early interest in rock and electric guitar styles. He gravitated toward rock, blues and Latin rhythms, which shaped a playing style that blends aggressive rock phrasing with melodic sensibilities suited to crossover Latin popular music. His stage presence and technical skill made him a sought-after guitarist in regional scenes.
Career with Selena and the Chris Pérez Band
In the late 1980s Pérez joined Selena y Los Dinos as lead guitarist, where his rock-influenced approach helped broaden the band’s sonic palette. He and Selena formed a personal relationship and married in 1992. After Selena’s death in 1995, Pérez continued his musical career and formed the Chris Pérez Band. Their debut album, Resurrection, received critical attention and won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album in 2000.
Writing, later projects and legacy
In 2012 Pérez published a memoir, To Selena, With Love, recounting his life and marriage with Selena. He has remained active as a performer and collaborator in Latin rock and related genres, participating in tribute events and studio projects. His work is often cited for its role in bringing rock guitar textures into mainstream Tejano and Latin pop settings.
