Overview
Bjorg Lambrecht (2 April 1997 – 5 August 2019) was a Belgian professional road cyclist who rode for the UCI WorldTeam Lotto–Soudal. During his short career he was widely regarded as one of Belgium’s most promising young climbers and stage-race talents, earning selection for major races at WorldTour level.
Early career and development
Lambrecht progressed through the junior and under‑23 ranks in Belgium, attracting attention for consistent performances in hilly terrain and multi‑day events. His results at youth level and in continental races led to a contract with Lotto–Soudal, the Belgian WorldTour team that has a history of developing young riders into Grand Tour competitors.
Professional career
As a professional with Lotto–Soudal, Lambrecht rode in WorldTour races and stage races that tested climbing and endurance. He was named on the start list for the 2018 Vuelta a España, marking his first participation in a Grand Tour. Teammates and sport directors described him as dedicated, disciplined and steadily improving in stage races.
Riding style and strengths
Lambrecht was regarded primarily as a climbing specialist who performed best on rolling and mountainous courses. His style combined a quiet but determined temperament with the ability to stay with leading groups on steep finishes. Team staff saw him as a rider with potential to develop into a general classification contender at week‑long stage races.
Accident and death
On 5 August 2019, during the third stage of the Tour de Pologne, Bjorg Lambrecht crashed into a concrete structure at the side of the road. He sustained severe injuries and died later that day at the age of 22. The accident shocked the cycling community and prompted immediate questions about rider safety and roadside protection in fast finishes.
Legacy and response
Lambrecht’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from teammates, rivals and cycling organisations worldwide. Race organisers, teams and national federations paid respects with moments of silence and other tributes. He is remembered as a modest, hard‑working young rider whose potential had only begun to emerge on the international stage.
