Overview
Armen Vardani Sarkissian (born 23 June 1952) is an Armenian statesman, diplomat and former academic and business figure. He served briefly as Prime Minister of Armenia from 4 November 1996 to 20 March 1997, represented Armenia for two decades as its ambassador in the United Kingdom, and was elected President of Armenia on 9 April 2018. He announced his resignation on 23 January 2022, citing the limited powers afforded to the office under the country's constitution.
Background and career before politics
Sarkissian trained in the sciences and spent much of his early career in academic, technological and commercial fields. Over time he combined scholarly work with private-sector experience and international engagement. This blend of science, management and international exposure shaped his later diplomatic and public-service roles and informed his emphasis on modernization and technological development in Armenia.
Political and diplomatic service
After serving as head of government in the late 1990s, Sarkissian moved to a long diplomatic posting. From 1998 until 2018 he was Armenia's ambassador in London, a tenure often described as among the longest in that post. During those years he worked to strengthen political, cultural and economic ties between Armenia and the United Kingdom and to engage the Armenian diaspora in Europe.
Presidency and resignation
In April 2018 Sarkissian became president in a period of political change in Armenia. His presidency took place after a transition of the country's constitutional system toward a parliamentary model, which reduced the executive powers of the president. Citing the limited influence and constraints of the office under the revised constitution, he stepped down from the presidency in January 2022.
Significance and notable facts
- He is known for combining scientific and business experience with diplomatic service, reflecting an interdisciplinary background.
- His long tenure as ambassador in London made him a familiar figure in Armenian–UK relations and diaspora affairs.
- His resignation highlighted debates in Armenia about the role and powers of largely ceremonial heads of state in a parliamentary system.
- References to his Armenian identity often appear with the native-language rendering; see the Armenian-language form Armenian in many biographical notices.
Taken together, Sarkissian's career illustrates a trajectory from science and business into high-level diplomacy and national office, and his presidency is frequently discussed in the context of Armenia's constitutional evolution and the balance between symbolic leadership and political authority.
