Al Jardine (born September 3, 1942) is an American musician and singer‑songwriter best known as a founding member and guitarist of the Beach Boys. Over decades with the group he contributed rhythm guitar, tight vocal harmonies and occasional lead vocals on several of the band's recordings. Jardine is also credited with composing and co‑writing songs that charted in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.
Musical role and notable recordings
Within the band Jardine was frequently a harmony singer and rhythm guitarist, a role central to the Beach Boys' layered vocal sound. He sang lead on the single version of the 1965 hit "Help Me, Rhonda" and later assumed lead duties on tracks such as "Come Go with Me" (1978) and the solo-era number "From There to Back Again" (2012). One of his best‑known songwriting successes with the group was "Lady Lynda," which became a top‑10 hit in the UK in 1978.
Career highlights and development
Jardine was part of the band's evolution from surf‑rock beginnings into more elaborate studio arrangements and later, diverse solo and group projects. He remained a visible presence in live performances for many years, and after the death of fellow member Carl Wilson he altered his involvement with the touring ensemble and pursued more solo work.
Solo work and later recognition
Following his departure from full‑time touring, Jardine released solo recordings and continued to perform selectively. His work both inside and outside the band earned him recognition with the rest of the group: in 1988 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Beach Boys.
