Overview
Sarah Alice (Addams) Haldeman (June 5, 1853 – March 19, 1915) was an American craftswoman, philanthropist and bank manager. She is best known in part for her familial connection to social reformer Jane Addams, and for combining traditional domestic arts with responsibilities in local finance and civic life.
Early life
Haldeman was born in Cedarville, Illinois; her upbringing in a small Midwestern community shaped her interests in practical arts and local institutions. She belonged to the Addams family, which produced several members active in education, public service, and cultural pursuits. Her early years cultivated skills in handiwork and community engagement that she later applied in both volunteer and professional roles. Cedarville remained an important reference point in accounts of her life.
Crafts, occupations and bank management
Alice Haldeman worked as a craftswoman, producing and promoting domestic handicrafts at a time when the arts-and-crafts ideal was influential in America. After the death of her husband she took charge of his banking affairs and managed the institution, an uncommon role for women of her generation. Her combination of practical craft skills and financial oversight illustrates how some women expanded their activities beyond the domestic sphere into business and community leadership.
Philanthropy and civic involvement
Throughout her adult life Haldeman supported local philanthropic and cultural initiatives. She maintained ties to reform networks through family connections and supported causes in education, relief and the arts. Contemporary accounts describe her as a woman who used both her craft knowledge and resources to benefit neighborhood institutions and charitable efforts.
Death and legacy
Alice Haldeman died of pneumonia on March 19, 1915. Her life is remembered as an example of late 19th–early 20th century women who blended domestic artistry, philanthropy and business responsibility. Histories of the region and of the Addams family note her managerial role and community contributions. Pneumonia was reported as the immediate cause of death.
