Overview

Alexander James Jeffrey Horne (born 10 September 1978) is a British comedian, writer and performer. He is best known as the creator of the comedy format Taskmaster, and as the founder and leader of the musical-comedy ensemble The Horne Section. Horne works across live performance, radio and television and is noted for combining wordplay, absurd premises and musical elements in his material.

Career and projects

Horne's work ranges from stand-up and sketch to band-led comedy. He formed The Horne Section, a troupe that mixes songs, improvisation and comedy, and has taken that concept to live audiences as well as producing material for broadcast. In addition to performing, Horne writes and devises formats and material used by other performers and production teams.

Taskmaster

Taskmaster began as a live comedy idea before being adapted into a televised series. The TV show debuted in 2015 and pairs a designated Taskmaster host with Horne as the show's assistant and arbiter of rules. The programme presents competing comedians with inventive and often silly challenges; Horne devises and adjudicates many of the tasks and maintains the show's scoring and format. The programme's distinctive structure and tone have led to international adaptations and a steady fan following.

Style and reception

Horne's comic style is characterised by deadpan delivery, inventive constraints and playful intellectual games. He often frames humour through unusual rulesets or musical interludes, which gives his work a distinctive, slightly theatrical quality. Critics and audiences have praised his originality in format creation and his skill at blending different comedy forms.
